Project Introduction Webinar

The qRD hosted a webinar on December 5, 2024, to introduce the Savary Island Community Plan Review & Update, go over the project timeline, and answer questions from the public. A recording of the webinar is available below.

Engagement Update

Due to the Canada Post strike, we have postponed the Community Discussion Sessions originally planned for the beginning of December. The qRD wants to notify all property owners by mail prior to these meetings; however, we don’t know when that will be possible with the strike. We anticipate holding these sessions in early 2025. More details will be provided in the coming weeks.

Project Overview

The qathet Regional District is updating the Savary Island Community Plan! This update will build on previous plans and studies, and include many opportunities for the public to share their ideas and insights.

An Official Community Plan (OCP) sets out a long-term vision for a community and establishes community goals and policies for achieving that vision. An OCP provides a policy framework to guide lands use and development decision making of the regional district, other government agencies, and landowners. The current Savary Island OCP is almost 20 years old and is due for an update.

The OCP update is a process for Savary Island residents to set the future vision for the Island! This is an opportunity to discuss what the people of Savary Island want for the future.

Key Messages:

  • We are at the beginning of the process to update the Savary Island Community Plan (OCP). No decisions or directions have been set as we are still in the community exploration and visioning phase.
  • Community feedback received throughout the process will help to inform key directions for OCP goals, objectives, and policies.
  • Existing technical reports (e.g. coastal flood mapping, slope hazard study, groundwater study) and best practices are important background information which will be explored with the community and help to inform key directions for land use.
  • Please stay tuned to our upcoming events and get involved in the process. We want to hear from you!
