qathet Regional District Launches New Public Facing qRD Land Information Map
qathet Regional District, B.C. — The qathet Regional District (qRD) is pleased to announce the launch of our new public, online Land Information Map which covers the boundaries of the entire qathet Regional District, including the City of Powell River.
Available tools within the web map include the ability to turn mapping layers on and off; search for parcels by address, parcel identification number, property roll number or plan number; identify and measure features; show mapping coordinates; add markups to a map; and even print a map to an image or pdf file.
The new map, which is maintained by qRD Geographic Information Systems (GIS) staff and hosted on ESRI’s ArcGIS Online, adds additional land use planning layers that include consolidated zoning, Official Community Plan (OCP) land use designation information, as well as layers that identify Development Permit Areas (DPAs), Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), and Potential Hazard Areas.
This map replaces the existing qRD iMaptoo which was maintained in partnership with Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) GIS staff for more than 10 years. We appreciate all the fine work that went into maintaining that tool over the last decade.
“This is the culmination of several years of effort by our Technical Services and Planning department staff,” said Caleb Allen, Manager of Information Technology. “Leveraging existing qRD GIS infrastructure and expertise alongside ArcGIS Online will allow for improvements to the user experience, increase publicly available information, and reduce cost, while still providing critical basemaps and underlay elements. The simplified update process will allow datasets that change frequently to be refreshed quickly and easily, thus making the data more current. The ESRI maintained Community Map of Canada Basemaps will provide context from authoritative sources.”
The new map supports all PC browsers, Mac browsers, and is mobile friendly. To check out the new interactive map, please visit: qathet.ca/qrd-map. Members of the public who currently have the old map link bookmarked are reminded to update to the current link to maintain access to the webmap.
“GIS systems are critical tools to assist our residents and property owners in better understanding the spatial layout of our region and provide a transparent overview of the physical conditions of the areas in which we operate,” said qathet Regional District Board Chair, Clay Brander. “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our Technical Services and Planning staff for their efforts to update and improve our mapping services, and to the CVRD GIS team for all their assistance over the years.”
