Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department Announces Retirement of Chief Chris Philpott, Deputy Chief Douglas Corbett appointed as New Fire Chief

qathet, B.C. – The Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department (SIVFD) is recognizing Fire Chief Chris Philpott who is stepping down after serving as the department’s Chief for seven years. Chris Philpott will remain with the department as a volunteer.

Fire Chief Philpott’s leadership has maintained the SIVFD’s small volunteer roster as the reliable emergency response agency providing the community with fire protection, medical first responder and general rescue services. During his time Chief Philpott oversaw continued improvements at all three of Savary Island’s fire halls including the recent implementation of rain barrels for sustainable water catchment at the west hall. Most notably Chief Philpott has led the fire department’s oversight for the design and build of the new Fire Engine 21; a project over two years of effort culminating in the new fire engine delivery expected later this month.

“The role of a fire chief is extraordinarily multifaceted. These remarkable volunteers serve not only as first responders but also as leaders and mentors. They assume significant responsibility in order to safeguard their neighbours and strengthen the resilience of our community,” said Electoral Area A Director Jason Lennox. “We extend our sincere thanks and pride to Chief Philpott for his steadfast perseverance and dedication to the Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department and to Savary Island as a whole. We thank Chief Corbett for stepping forward to assume this important leadership role and positioning the department for continued success well into the future.”

“We extend our sincere gratitude to Chief Philpott for his many years of exemplary service leading our dedicated team of community volunteers, who generously devote significant time, often at personal sacrifice and time away from their loved ones, to help protect both lives and property,” said qathet Regional District Board Chair Clay Brander. “We are pleased to welcome Chief Corbett into this diverse and rewarding leadership role. We are confident he will continue to serve our community with distinction. We wish him every success in his new position.”

“My experience with incoming Fire Chief Corbett gives me confidence that the Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department will continue the emphasis on training and equipment standards to ensure our volunteers’ safety.” said General Manager of Emergency Services, Ryan Thoms. “I sincerely appreciate the leadership that Chief Philpott has provided during his tenure keeping our volunteers safe and trained to provide critical emergency services for the community.”
