qathet, BC – The qathet Regional District (qRD) will soon be accepting cash at the Resource Recovery Centre. After a brief transition period, the Resource Recovery Centre will offer debit, credit, account charging, and cash transactions at the scale house. The qRD is requesting patience from the public in the short-term while staff onboard cash handling services on site.
“As we transition our service delivery model to accommodate the acceptance of cash, we need to acquire the necessary physical equipment, ensure we have the appropriate security measures in place, create new procedures, and provide necessary staff training,” said Manager of Environmental Services, Jason Kouwenhoven. “We have anticipated the process may take up to eight weeks to implement.”
At the October 23, 2024 qRD Regional Board Meeting, the Regional Board provided direction to staff to offer cash handling services at the Resource Recovery Centre. The Board provided a timeline for implementation of eight weeks or less. To review the full staff report, please click here.
“We understand the public’s desire to see cash acceptance at the Resource Recovery Centre, and have directed staff to make this possible,” said Regional Board Chair, Clay Brander. “We greatly appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we make the necessary steps to serve you better.”
The qRD is responsible for long-term planning and management of solid waste for the entire regional district. “Working Towards Zero Waste” is the philosophy held by qathet Regional District that informs its initiatives and programs. The closure of the Marine Avenue Old Incinerator Site and the build out of the Resource Recovery Centre is a key component of the qRD’s Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP).
