Celebrate Local Government Awareness Week and Asset Management Day from May 12 to 18, 2024

qathet, BC – Join the qathet Regional District, Tla’amin Nation and City of Powell River as we celebrate Local Government Awareness Week from May 12 to 18, 2024 and Asset Management Awareness Day on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

Local Government Awareness Week is a provincial initiative put on in partnership between local governments in B.C., the Union of BC Municipalities, CivicInfo BC, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. The goal of the week is to increase public awareness and education about the roles and responsibilities of local governments throughout the province.

During this week, local governments also celebrate Asset Management Day on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 to bring attention to how crucial good asset management practices are for sustainable service delivery and long-term asset planning for future generations.

“qathet means “working together” and on Local Government Awareness Week I want to honour our local governments’ long history and hopeful future of collaboration and cooperation,” said Hegus John Hackett, Tla’amin Nation. “I am optimistic about our work ahead to collectively tackle the big challenges of our generation including housing, meaningful jobs, and reconciliation.”

“The City is responsible for providing residents with the many services, facilities, programs and staff that makes Powell River such a great place to live,” said Mayor Ron Woznow, City of Powell River. “Finding more shared opportunities to work together with Tla’amin Nation and the qathet Regional District will strengthen and enrich our community. Please join us in celebrating Local Government Awareness Week and enjoy learning more about what we do and the important role you play.”

“Collaboration among our region’s three governments is paramount for uplifting regional projects and fostering our region’s progress and shared resiliency,” said Chair Clay Brander, qathet Regional District. “By raising public awareness and building collectively on shared goals, we can unlock the full potential of our communities and create a brighter future for all.”
