Powell River residents are advised of Grizzly Bear sighting in Lang Bay on September 24, 2024

Powell River residents are advised to be aware around Lang Creek as a Grizzly Bear has been confirmed in the area today. This Grizzly Bear has not caused any conflict or acted aggressively, and seems to be foraging for natural foods.

The BC Conservation Officer Service said the bear was first spotted near Roberts Road area on September 20th and then on Kennedy Road on September 21st. Since then, the Grizzly Bear has moved into the Lang Creek area and was sighted at the Powell River Salmon hatchery this morning.

The coastal Grizzly Bear population is fragile and the BCCOS is asking nearby residents to be vigilant. Although it is not common for Grizzlies to be in this area, it’s not unheard of to see a Grizzly around Powell River.

What can the public do to stay safe? Proper animal husbandry – the control and management of domestic animals, as well as managing attractants, are key. The public should also be Bear smart while out recreating and can reference the Wildsafe BC website for more information.

The Grizzly Bear will most likely be utilizing the Salmon as a food source in Lang Creek and the BCCOS advises residents to avoid the area, including the trails at the Salmon Hatchery for the time being. This is necessary to keep the public safe, reduce conflict and keep the bear safe. We need this bear to have the least amount of interaction with people, which will set it up for success if it needs to be moved.

The BCCOS advises the public to report sightings of the Grizzly bear to the RAPP line: 1-877-952-7277 or online at https://forms.gov.bc.ca/environment/rapp/.
